HMS Weymouth was a Royal Naval cruiser which, at the outbreak of the war in August, 1914, was sent from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean to search for the German cruiser Emden which was sinking Allied shipping there. In November, 1914 she was operating off the East African coast near the mouth of the Rufiji River which was under German control. On 10th November HMS Weymouth opened fire on enemy positions on the left bank of the river mouth to which the Germans replied in kind and in the ensuing short exchange of gunfire, Walter Fitzjohn was killed.
